Card Sentry Information

Arcola First Bank is pleased to offer a very valuable service for our customers. Identity theft and fraudulent debit card activity are in the news often and incidents are continually on the rise in the United States. To provide you with another level of protection, we have partnered with Computer Services, INC. (CSI) to offer a program called Card Sentry along with an upgraded service known as Real Time Denials. The Card Sentry program is a system designed to detect unusual or suspicious debit and ATM card activity. Your transactions are now being monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through a system of rules based technology. The “rules” are defined by transaction amounts, transaction velocity, geographical dispersion, merchant categories and other criteria. Early contact with you, the cardholder, will help to prevent losses due to lost/stolen cards, counterfeit cards, data base compromises and other fraudulent activity. There is no cost to you as the bank is paying for this service.

CSI is a valued and proven partner that Arcola First Bank has worked with for over 20 years. CSI will attempt to contact you directly to validate unusual transactions. An example would be if your debit card number were to be used here in Douglas County, and again in California during the same hour of the day. CSI will give you information regarding the activity and attempt to confirm that you initiated the transaction. Should the transactions be fraudulent, CSI will have the ability to block the card to prevent further losses. Please be aware that CSI will NOT ask you for your card number, security code, PIN number or other personal information.

While Card Sentry monitors activity and triggers customer notification, an add-on service known as Real Time Denials will monitor for fraudulent activity and will actually deny transaction authorization. The vast majority of “rules” in the Real Time Denials system are based on proven fraudulent vendors and companies.

CSI: Questions & Answers

Q: Why is the bank doing this?
A: The bank takes fraud protection seriously and is using the service to help protect our customers.

Q: Is this service going to cost me anything?
A: No. There is a cost but the bank is providing the service at no charge to you.

Q: Is CSI going to see information that they wouldn’t have otherwise? My private information?
A: No. CSI processes all of the transactions for the bank already. The will simply be screening those debit card transactions to identify anything that appears to be fraudulent. (They have established a set of rules that they will screen the transactions against….see below.)

Q: How does CSI determine “suspicious or unusual activity”?
A: CSI uses Rules Based Technology. They monitor transactions based on:

  • Transaction amounts
  • Transaction Velocity
  • Geographical Areas
  • Merchant Category, etc.

If it appears that any of the “Rules” are being broken and the card is being used in a non-typical way, they will contact you.

Q: What will happen if suspicious activity is seen by your processor?
A: CSI will attempt to contact you to verify the transaction.

Q: What if I’m on vacation and using the card out of state? Will CSI call me?
A: It is possible that CSI will call to verify transactions if the activity seems unusual. However, if you choose to do so, you can let us know when you will be going on vacation. We will inform CSI and they will take that into consideration during the period you designate that you will be gone.

Q: What if CSI cannot contact me?
A: If they are unable to reach you, they will email the bank to let us know that suspicious activity has occurred. We will then try to reach you.

Q: What happens if it is clearly a fraudulent activity? Will CSI prevent the transaction?
A: CSI continually updates their database with known fraudulent billers. If a transaction on your account is with a known fraudulent business, CSI will deny the transaction.

Q: How else can I prevent fraud on my account?

  • Check your account transactions frequently and, at the very least, review your monthly statement thoroughly.
  • Never give out your account number, debit card number, expiration date or other information to a caller or email inquirer that you did not contact.
  • If you card is lost or stolen, contact the bank immediately.
  • Keep your PIN number private. Memorize it. Don’t write it down, write it on your card or share the number with anyone.
